Firefox Update News Beta, Beta everywhere

Mozilla Developer News » Blog Archive » What the heck is with this update?

There have been more than a few people wondering why they got a update when there is no announcement on any of the Mozilla sites. The update you are getting is the release candidate mentioned here.You are, whether you knew it for sure or not, a beta tester! How did this happen? Simple – you installed Firefox 1.5b1 or 1.5b2 and then used the auto-upgrade system to move to the 1.5 final release.

Since you installed a beta and never re-installed Firefox from the full installer your update “channel? is beta – which means you are willing to run beta versions of Firefox. You can confirm this by opening the file {firefox install dir}\defaults\prefs\channel-prefs.js in a text editor. If line 2 looks like this:

* pref(?, “beta?);

you are on the beta channel

  1. Jason says:

    Ah…so that would explain why I got that popup box last night…

  2. Atariboy says:

    I’m running and i seem to get a lot more crashes than 1.0.7 or 1.5, i think they have created a bug with the update

  3. Atariboy – Could it be one of your extensions is not playing well? I have not had any crashes since I installed the update on this machine. Windows XP SP1.
